Ball State students to visit Dresden, Germany

MUNCIE, IN -

A group of Ball State University students is heading to Germany for a trip that will include a tour of the building Kurt Vonnegut made famous in his novel "Slaughterhouse-Five."

The students will visit Dresden and tour the underground meat locker where the Indianapolis native and other POWs survived the deadly Allied firebombing of that city.

American and British bombers pummeled Dresden on Feb. 13-14, 1945, destroying its centuries-old baroque city center and killing tens of thousands of Germans.

The students' Feb. 6-14 trip will be led by English professor Rai Peterson, who says it will be "both eerie and exciting knowing we'll be standing on the spot where an Indiana hero was transformed."

The students' trip will include delivering lectures about Vonnegut's life and German heritage to interested Germans.
