More vouchers for current private school students

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A new report from the Indiana Department of Education shows a growing number of students already enrolled in private schools finding state support through the school voucher program.

Education Department analysts found that roughly 40 percent of students receiving vouchers this year had never enrolled in public schools. Their report was released Monday afternoon.

Indiana's school voucher program is one of the most expansive in the nation and one of the quickest growing, but accounts for a small portion of the state's overall student population.

A bargain struck between former Gov. Mitch Daniels and voucher opponents in 2011 required recipients to have spent at least one year in a public school before receiving a voucher. But lawmakers approved a modest expansion last year which eliminated that requirement for some students.
