Blowing snow tonight, snowy start Sunday, coldest air yet coming

Updated:

Due to a strong northwesterly wind , areas along and north of I-70 remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until 7am Sunday.  Travel is difficult to impossible for many county roads north of Indianapolis and a steady 20-25mph (with higher gusts) will continue into midnight.

ADVISORY WEEKEND_SNOW_1

A new snow-maker arrives after midnight and a provides burst of heavy snow for some Sunday morning.  There will be a sharp southwest to northeast gradient in snow amounts…with very little falling in Bloomington to up to 4-5″ in Peru and Marion.  In between and along I-70 one to three inches is possible by early afternoon.  This snow will fall into surface temps in the teens… so expect slow traveling Sunday morning.

STATS

Temperatures "briefly" warm into the 30s Sunday afternoon before the next Arctic front races across the state Sunday night.  Snow squalls develop along this front and temperatures tumble to below zero by Monday morning.  A Wind Chill Watch will eventually become a Warning as we expect "feels like" temperatures of 30 below Monday morning and near 40 to 45 below Tuesday morning.

WATCH RPM_WINDCHILL3

Tuesday morning lows may near 20 below in some areas, and mark the coldest temperatures of this brutally cold season.  Though temperatures modify later in the week, the threat for heavier winter precip arrives.  Stay tuned for updates on potentially messy travel heading into next weekend.
