School chief Ritz gets ovation at Pence speech

INDIANAPOLIS -

Embattled Indiana schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz has received a standing ovation during Republican Gov. Mike Pence's second State of the State address.

Pence thanked Ritz and members of the State Board of Education for their work to improve the state's schools.

Tensions have run high between Ritz and the board members, all of whom were appointed by Pence or former Gov. Mitch Daniels. Ritz is the lone Democrat in the Pence administration and opposes school vouchers and many other education changes implemented under Daniels and whose expansion Pence supports.

Ritz last month accused Pence of a power grab by creating a separate education agency. Pence has said he will not pursue any changes in her status as chairman of the state education panel.
