Pence to discuss business tax cut, same-sex marriage

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Governor Mike Pence is preparing for his second State of the State address with hot button topics like same-sex marriage, a business tax cut and education on the table.

Economic development and pre-kindergarten education are also expected to be topics.

One difference from last year: Gov. Pence did not speak from a TelePrompter for his first State of the State address, but he'll be using it for Tuesday's speech.

Gov. Pence is backing a House alternative to his call for the elimination of a local tax on business equipment.

Pence said last month he would like to see the state's business property tax phased out. After an outcry from local leaders, House Republican leaders proposed giving counties the choice of whether to eliminate the tax.

Pence Budget Chief Chris Atkins told members of the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday the governor is supporting the House plan.

Senate Republicans have crafted a different measure that would eliminate the tax for most small businesses and cut the state's corporate income tax instead.

It's likely he'll talk about the definition of marriage amendment, which has become a controversial topic.
