Students, parents prepare to return to school Monday

Updated:

Travel advisories have been lifted in many counties across the state and many are preparing to head back to school Monday.

Most schools have been out since mid-December for Christmas vacation, plus another week due to the weather.

For Indianapolis Public Schools, that means nearly 30,000 students and 4,000 teachers and staff will be back at school.

At Hamilton Southeastern, nearly 20,000 students will return to class. That includes the Wright family.

"We're super excited to be out of the house," said mother Karen Wright.

The family made it out for Evan's church league basketball game Sunday. It marks one of the first days they made it out since the snow storm hit a week ago.

"I didn't think it was going to be a full week [out of school] at all, I thought it would be a couple of days," Wright said.

But the snow followed by the extreme cold forced hundreds of school cancellations. Everyone found their own way to pass the time.

"Having my friends over and building snow forts, playing Uno and the Wii," elementary school student Evan Wright said.

"I got to stay home and wrestle my brother and have fun. I got to do a snow angel," elementary school student AJ Hindley said.

Despite the fun, there were also a few fits.

"I have a seven and a nine-year-old and when they'd start getting at each other you'd send them to their own rooms, they'd go read, and separate themselves, and they'd be fine," mother Michele Hindley said.

Now that the roads are better, it means the time at home is about to be over.

"I think everyone is ready to go back to their routines," Michele Hindley said.

For Karen Wright, that also means going back to school since she teaches fifth grade.

"We definitely have to do some makes ups and ISTEP comes at a certain time and we need to make sure we are ready for that I believe we can get there but we do have a lot of work ahead," Karen Wright said.

School districts ask that people to make sure their sidewalks and bus stops are clear for students returning to school.
