Records: Solicitors keep bulk of money raised

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Telemarketers raising money for Indiana charities are raking in profits while the organizations they represent receive a pittance of the money raised.

The Indianapolis Star reports that many nonprofits with ties to police, firefighters or veterans hire professional solicitors to raise money. But the solicitors keep the bulk of the funds, and some organizations get as little as 5 percent of the money raised.

Experts say the practice is one of the worst ways to raise money and allows solicitors to prey on people's emotions.

They suggest 65 percent of collections should reach the nonprofits. But state records for the Association of Indiana State Troopers, Indiana Drug Enforcement Association and Indiana Firefighters Association show the three groups often have received less than 20 percent.
