Indy airport panel sues over abandoned gas station

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indianapolis airport officials have sued BP Exploration & Oil Inc. for failing to honor a lease on a gas station and fast food restaurant that were abandoned after the city's old terminal closed.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that the Indianapolis Airport Authority wants the oil giant to continue paying nearly $188,000 a year in lease and concession payments until the contract runs out in September 2019.

BP stopped operating the station in 2009 and quit making payments in October of this year.

Airport officials say the authority amended its lease with BP in 1999 to allow it to move near the new terminal that opened in 2008. They say BP declined to move because its primary customers weren't travelers.

BP officials didn't return calls seeking comment.
