Ward off those winter allergies

Updated:

Spending more time at home during the winter months can be hard on people with mold, dust or pet allergies. But you can limit your exposure to these indoor triggers by following a few simple tips.

First, use exhaust fans and dehumidifiers to keep your indoor humidity level between 30 and 40 percent. That will help prevent mold growth, which can cause asthma attacks and breathing problems.

Make sure your Christmas decorations are mold-free before bringing them inside by spraying them with a hose (assuming it's above freezing!) and removing dust.

To ward off dust mites, keep your carpets clean and your floors mopped. Regularly wash bed linens and pajamas in hot water. You can also buy dust mite covers for pillows, comforters and mattresses.

Experts also recommend upgrading to high-efficiency furnace filters which capture 30 times more allergens - or, if you use the cheaper filters, change them out regularly.
