A northern Indiana man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder in what authorities said was an unprovoked stabbing of a 76-year-old Boy Scout leader has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

The Kokomo Tribune reports Shane Golitko was sentenced Monday. Golitko agreed to plead guilty but mentally ill to murder in November in exchange for felony charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery by bodily waste being dismissed.

Golitko killed Art Anderson as he led two boys on a hike along the Nickel Plate Trail in Bunker Hill in 2011.

Golitko, diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, said he had stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication before attacking his mother inside her Bunker Hill home and then running onto the trail and stabbing Anderson.
