INDIANAPOLIS -

Indianapolis Metro Police have made an arrest in the fatal stabbing of a man at the Gateway Motel in the 1700 block of Lafayette Road late Monday night.

The victim was identified as Anthony Bankhead. The stabbing occurred around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

The victim was taken to Eskenazi Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, police took a man into custody near the incident.

On Tuesday evening, detectives arrested 45-year-old Wallace Burns of Indianapolis on a preliminary charge of murder, pending a final charging decision by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

Burns is held in the Arrestee Processing Center with no bond.

Police say that robbery was likely the motive.

Police at the scene told Eyewitness News the man was attempting to break into a car at a lot near 17th and Belleview, which is less than a block away from the homicide scene.

They also said the same man broke into a home on 17th Street, between the motel and parking lot, and held a couple hostage for more than an hour.

Detectives recovered a weapon in the area that Crime Lab technicians examined.
