INDIANAPOLIS -

Most of us will still buy our Christmas gifts at the store and walk out with a big shopping bag. But with shipping deadlines approaching, it's crunch time for Internet shopping.

Open the box and grab the gift you bought online, that's the easy part. The hard part is timing your buy so you get the best price by Christmas.

"Here's an interesting discount with free shipping," said Professor Richard Feinberg.

The Purdue retail expert watches the web for buying trends.

"It is the year of the consumer and none of those retailers can afford to lose your sale over a dollar difference or a five-dollar difference," Feinberg said.

The first tip is that after you've compared prices in the stores, don't be afraid to contact the retailer online and ask if they'll be at a competitor's price.

"I use a lot of promotion codes and get some sales," said one shopper, Abby.

Shoppers say they have put items in their online shopping cart, but did not check out. Within a day or so, they got discount coupons from the company, anxious to make the sale.

"If you leave an item in the cart," Feinberg said, "there's a big chance the bigger companies will give you something, if you wait."

But that comes with some caution. You might not get the deal you hope for and some of the items could go out of stock while you wait.

The more shopping you do, the more offers you get.

"We got Victoria's Secret, we got a lot of coupons with that," Abby said.

"I got a ton of email. I just delete it," said Monte Moore.

But for Monte, who did half his Christmas shopping online, all the tricks and the strategies can just be too much.

"I know there are certain sites you can go to get discount coupons and things like that, but kind of takes away the convenience of it all," he said.
