Police chase on Indianapolis southeast side ends with suspect dead

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A brief police chase on the Indianapolis southeast side ended with the suspect dead.

It started at Brookside Park when a Park Ranger tried to talk to a man in a black Dodge who was behaving suspiciously. The Park Ranger said the man, later identified as 49-year-old Duane Slentz, was evasive when questioned and when he was asked to provide identification, the man fled the scene.

Slentz crashed his car in the 3800 block of South Franklin Road, and then ran inside a home.

Slentz told police he had a gun. At that point, officers called in the SWAT team.

While waiting for the SWAT team to arrive, police say they tried to negotiate with the suspect to surrender. Officers said they could hear Slentz loading ammunition. When the suspect made an aggressive movement, an officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect. Slentz died at the scene.

The death investigation will be conducted by the IMPD CIRT (Critical Incident Response Team). Marion County Crime Lab will assist in gathering evidence.
