Children discover bodies of murder-suicide victims

INDIANAPOLIS -

A man and woman were involved in a murder-suicide on the Indianapolis east side Monday, and their bodies were discovered by children. It happened Monday morning at a home on North Gale St. near 30th and Sherman.

It's already a sad story in and of itself, but then when you place it a week and a half before Christmas, it makes it downright heart-wrenching.

According to Indianapolis Metro Police, 27-year-old Thomas Emery shot and killed 31-year-old Tamika Jones-Fleming and then turned the gun on himself.

Two children, a six-year-old girl and an eleven-year-old boy, were home at the time of the shooting. According to police, the children told them they heard the couple, who had been together for ten years, but weren't married, arguing last night and heard some commotion. The children came out of their rooms to see what was going on.  At that point, the shooting had already taken place, but they didn't realize what they were looking at so they went back to bed.

Monday morning, they woke up around 6:45 am and that's when they discovered the full scope of the situation and called 911.

"It's something they'll remember the rest of their lives. Christmas will never be the same," said Detective Marcus Kennedy, IMPD.

The children have been turned over to the custody of family.  It was another heartbreaking scene as they were brought out and embraced by their grandmother and another family member and the children burst into tears.
