Mandela funeral Sunday

Updated:

The anti-apartheid leader's funeral got under way about 1 a.m. local time on Sunday at a family grave site in his hometown of Qunu in Eastern Cape province.

Local dignitaries and international VIP's including Oprah Winfrey are in attendance.  The Prince of Wales and the Clinton's are also expected to attend.

The funeral started earlier than expected to ensure Mandela was buried by sundown.

South African military honor guards are marched and guests arrived ahead of the state funeral for Nelson Mandela.

The burial will end 10 days of mourning ceremonies that included a massive stadium memorial in Johannesburg and three days during which Mandela's body lay in state in the capital, Pretoria. He died Dec. 5 at the age of 95 in his Johannesburg home.

In preparation for the funeral, servicemen from the army, navy and air force have marched on a dirt road in Mandela's family compound. Nearly 5,000 guests are expected to be there, and a smaller group will attend the burial.
