INDIANAPOLIS -

Tesla Motors will open its first store in Indiana Friday at the Fashion Mall at Keystone. The California-based electric car maker will host its grand opening at 10:00 Friday morning.

Tesla, a leader in the electric car field, aims to change the car-buying experience by allowing customers to learn about electric driving with visual and interactive displays, and a design studio where customers can create their own Tesla. The Model S, which has a base price of about $60,000, will also be available at the Fashion Mall for test drives.

Tesla launched its first vehicle in 2008 with the Tesla Roadster, a highway-capable electric car. The automaker launched the Model S in 2011. Tesla claims the vehicle can travel 265 miles on a single charge, with a motor nearly three times as efficient as a gasoline engine.

This week Tesla also opened two charging stations in northern Indiana. The stations opened in Mishawaka and Angola on Wednesday. Tesla is working to beef up its presence with charging stations throughout the country, so its electric cars can be driven between New York and Los Angeles.
