12 Years a Slave, American Hustle top Golden Globes nominee list

Which would you rather, laughter or tears? That'll be the question on judges minds for this year's Golden Globes as "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" go head-to-head on a number of categories. Both movies have seven nominations, including Best Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy respectively. In television, HBO leads all networks with nine nominations, while Netflix, Showtime, and Starz pulled in an impressive six each.

"12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" will compete for the Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards. "12 Years a Slave" is widely viewed as an Oscar front-runner for its powerful exploration of slavery in the pre-Civil War United States. Con-man comedy "American Hustle" as already won a number of awards heading into the Globes.

Unsurprisingly, hit drama "Breaking Bad" has been nominated for Best Drama Series with lead actor Bryan Cranston up for Best Actor. "Breaking Bad" will face competition from the edgy "Masters of Sex" in both categories. Showtime's "homeland", which swept the drama category in the last Golden Globes was shut out for the major awards.
