The state of Indiana is giving a Carmel business $2 million in tax credits in exchange for creating 100 new jobs next year.

Allegion does business in 120 countries, but keeps its North American headquarters in Carmel. Indiana was not a lock to get the company, but it certainly liked what the state and Carmel had to offer and it is not alone.

For a community of 80,000, Carmel is experiencing unprecedented economic development for 2013. Allegion hung its banner out on Wednesday.

"We are creating a worldwide business here. We launched on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday," said Allegion CEO David Petratis.

The list is impressive.

Starting with Allegion's 100 new jobs, these companies, including GEICO, Nextgear Capital, American Specialty Health, Cellular Communications, Baldwin and Lyons, Polleo Computer Systems and Mainstreet Property Group, when combined, represent a six-percent increase in the workforce with 2,756 new jobs in the pipeline by 2016.

One of the most impressive aspects in all this, even more than the job numbers, is the fact that Allegion and American Specialty Health both opted to locate in Carmel without the benefit of any city incentives.

Quality of life is playing a big part. Walkability plays a big role in that.

"I want to be able to walk to it. I want to be able to ride my bike to it. I want a sense of community that is around me and accessible. I want to know my neighbors," Carmel Chamber President Mo Merhoff said.

"That is why we built the Arts and Design District, City Center, Center for the Performing Arts and the Monon Community Center," said Nancy Heck, who works for the City of Carmel.

It is paying dividends. CNN Money Magazine named Carmel the Best Place to Live in America for cities between 50,000-100,000 people.
