Threatening call leads to Lafayette schools lockdown

Updated:
LAFAYETTE -

A threatening call led to a lockdown at Lafayette schools Wednesday.

The Lafayette Crisis Center contacted police after receiving a call at around 1:21 pm from someone saying they were near a school with a weapon, and they were going to hurt people at the school. The crisis center told police the call was cut off with no information about the caller.

Lafayette Police sent officers to schools throughout Lafayette. West Lafayette Police and Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department were also advised. Area schools made individual decisions to go to lockdown status based on their protocols.

It took about an hour and twenty minutes for the schools to determine that they were secure. No threats were identified to any school in the city of Lafayette.

The LPD Detective Division is working with the Crisis Center in an attempt to identify and locate the caller.  This investigation is ongoing.
