Coldest night in three years for central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS -

Central Indiana remains in the deep freeze, with the coldest temperatures yet to come. Another Arctic cold front moves through this afternoon with areas of light snow that may add a quick dusting.

Areas in north-central Indiana have already received a dusting.  The picture above was taken just before 1pm near Peru.  So expect some flurries and snow showers this evening, with temperatures nearing single digits before midnight.

Many places near zero for a low tonight, with areas away from Indianapolis' urban heat island likely dropping below zero. Most importantly will be the harsh wind chills as cold as -10 to -15 below!

This will mark Indianapolis' coldest night since February of 2011.  Interestingly enough, the city averages five nights a season with below zero lows.

The bus stop and walk to work will be brutal Thursday morning, with little relief in the afternoon.  Despite a bright sky, highs likely stay below 20 degrees and wind chills remain mostly in the single digits.

If you're' wondering… it's been six days since we've had temperature at or above freezing.  We'l be considerably below the average high (40) and low (25) the next 24 hours.

We're still targeting Friday night-Saturday for our next snow system.  While this doesn't appear to be a monster storm, it promises to bring an accumulating snow Central Indiana…. with a focus on I-70 and points northward.

Modeling snow amounts range from 2″ to nearly 5″, but we're a bit out of the comfort zone for specifics on amounts and locations.  But we should all plan on snow and/or wintry mix Friday night into Saturday.
