Keeping your home delivered packages safe

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

All those holiday gifts you ordered online will be arriving soon, but leaving them on your porch or doorstep may not be the safest plan.

More people are shopping online for the holidays this year than ever before.  That means more packages showing up at your door, but you want to make sure you are keeping track of those packages.

The Indianapolis Metro Police Department has received several reports of packages being stolen off front porches.

We found security video of thieves taking packages delivered to homes. In some cases, they follow delivery drivers.  In others, they just take advantage of the opportunity. Either way, there are steps you can take to make sure you get the packages you are expecting.

Chuck Cain is a manager of FedEx. He provided some tips.

"If you're out of town, you may want to ship to a friend or neighbor. They can secure your package. You can also ship to a FedEx office or worldwide service center and place on hold that's a secure location.  Also, when you fill out the shippers declaration the shipping invoice you can mark adult signature required that will insure package to someone responsible to accept it," he said.

UPS and United States Postal Service have similar options. In some of these cases, it was only a matter of minutes before the thieves walked off with someone's Christmas gifts.
