INDIANAPOLIS -

Religious and civic leaders and a diverse crowd of Hoosiers have praised Nelson Mandela as a model of reconciliation, understanding and perseverance.

A memorial service for the former South African president and anti-apartheid icon drew about 200 people to Indiana Statehouse Sunday for a celebration in words and music of the life of Mandela, who died Thursday.

Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana said the world has lost a giant "but how lucky we were to be in his presence."

The service drew blacks, whites and Asians young and old, and members of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh (seek) faiths. Banners touted values Mandela embodied including forgiveness, understanding and unity.

Catholic Archbishop Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis said Mandela "treated truth as a path to true and lasting reconciliation."
