Preserving movie archive presents 'reel' challenge

Indiana University has 2,200 reels of classic movies that it wants to digitize and preserve indefinitely, but challenges stand in the way.

IU President Michael McRobbie announced this fall the university's audio and video holdings would be digitized in five years as part of a $15 million partnership with an archiving service.

The Herald-Times reports IU officials are still trying to figure out how to digitize the reels that including World War II propaganda films and the home movies of director John Ford.

IU Associate Vice President Laurie Antolovic, who's in charge of overseeing the effort, has received estimates that the endeavor could take 15 years, not five.

Antolovic says rights management librarians also must be hired because while IU may not hold the copyrights to the material.
