IU-Southeast lockdown lifted after gun sighting

NEW ALBANY -

A lockdown of the campus at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany has been lifted. An alert on the campus web site said an armed individual had been reported on campus.

About 40 minutes after the alert was issued, the university sounded the all clear.

"All clear: Subject identified and there is no threat to campus. The initial alert is lifted and campus has returned to a normal status," a school official wrote in a tweet at 3:40 p.m.

A woman answering the telephone Thursday afternoon at the university's communications office says the lockdown was continuing, but had not further details.

IU spokesman Mark Land says the report came in just before 3 p.m. and the alerts followed shortly thereafter. Land says an area of the compact campus has been cordoned off while police conduct a search.

An alert was put on the campus web site telling people to trust their instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room and lock the door. It also told people to remain in place until the police, or a campus administrator known to them gives them the all clear.
