Family escapes east Indianapolis house fire

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A family escaped a fire that destroyed their home Tuesday evening on the east side of Indianapolis.

Neighbors alerted Dennis and Lynda Godbold of a fire in the basement of their Trowbridge Street home around 6 p.m. All occupants, including a sister of one of the owners, her son and two minor foster children, were able to get out of the home as fire spread up the walls.

Firefighters started to battle the blaze from the inside, but were forced to evacuate due to the danger of the floor possibly collapsing. A "Mayday" call was issued when one crew's exit was blocked by clutter in the home that had fallen and forced a back door closed.

All firefighters got out of the building safely and began fighting the fire from a defensive position outside.

The home was declared a total loss, but no injuries were reported.
