NW Indiana politician to admit 6 wire fraud counts

A northwestern Indiana politician has agreed to plead guilty to six federal counts of wire fraud alleging he used government employees and resources to run his re-election campaigns in 2008 and 2012.

Lake County Surveyor George Van Til also will pay the county as much as $20,000 in under a plea agreement made public Monday. The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report Van Til, a Democrat, also will voluntarily resign his office.

In return, federal prosecutors are dropping two counts alleging Van Til obstructed justice by paying an employee to destroy a computer hard drive containing evidence.

Defense attorney Scott King says the plea agreement is "the best resolution" of the case.

A judge in Hammond has scheduled a Thursday hearing for Van Til to change his plea.
