RICHMOND -

Indiana University Health will soon be extending its Lifeline medical helicopter service into eastern Indiana.

The Richmond Redevelopment Commission has approved $170,000 in funding toward a new helicopter hangar at the city's airport and quarters for emergency personnel to be on duty 24 hours a day all year.

Deputy fire chief Tim Parrott tells the Palladium-Item the helicopter service will allow patients to reach Indianapolis hospitals more quickly.

Parrott says a helicopter from Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, can arrive in Richmond in about 15 minutes, but the Lifeline service will cut that to just a few minutes. The Lifeline helicopter also will respond to emergencies in Union, Fayette, Henry and Randolph counties.

City officials say the helicopter facilities could be ready in March.
