MARTINSVILLE -

Three Morgan County jail inmates are accused of attempting to escape from the Martinsville facility.

Court documents say Austin Byers, 19, Ricky Croney, 23, both of Mooresville and Tyler Cassidy, 22, Camby, were preliminarily charged with Attempted Escape, Criminal Mischief and Possession of a Dangerous Device.

An investigation revealed that officers heard a banging sound coming from a cell in the jail's disciplinary segregation area early last Sunday morning. When officers checked the cell occupied by the three men, a hole in the cell wall was discovered. Police say the hole, about 6 inches in diameter, was on a cell wall that is opposite an unsecured administrative section of the sheriff's office.

Investigators say it will cost about $700 to repair the damage.
