Holiday travelers wary of snow

INDIANAPOLIS -

The State Police post in Lowell in northwest Indiana is reporting lake effect snow falling on I-94 around Michigan City.  Interstate 65 is dry and clear into Lake County.

The Peru State Police post reports light accumulating snow in the area, but roads are wet and they incidents. Logansport and Kokomo roads are dry.  A dispatcher in Howard County reported light flurries at 5:45 a.m.

Closer to the Indianapolis metro, overnight flakes fell in Hamilton, Johnson and Boone counties.  Roads are clear at 6:00 a.m.

AAA Hoosier Motor Club predicts 90-percent of people traveling more than 50 miles will do so by car or truck this holiday weekend, which means interstates will be crowded.

This is the busiest travel day of the year overall. But AAA also expects not as many people will be traveling this holiday as last year.

'Even though the economy is continuing to improve, so they say, it's doing so at a sluggish rate," said Greg Seiter of AAA. "And people are getting impatient. People are still feeling the pinch, and so they are cutting back where they can, and travel seems to be one of those areas."

Safety kits are a must when you travel. Make room on the luggage rack for reflective triangles, flares, bottled water, food, charged cell phone and key numbers to call.

According to GasBuddy.com, gasoline costs 23-cents less per gallon than at Thanksgiving in 2012.

Of the 43-million people traveling this holiday, about 10-percent plan to fly to their destinations.  But that is still over 4-million people packing airports.

Winter weather in the eastern U.S. is impacting flights nationwide.

About a thousand flights were canceled at Dallas Fort-Worth leading into this busy holiday period, stranding thousands of travelers.

FlightAware's Misery Map shows growing numbers of delays across the country as storms hit up and down the east coast.

Today and Sunday are expected to be the busiest travel days of the year.
