IFD crews fight Indianapolis west side building fire
IFD provided this picture to show the conditions firefighters are facing: frozen uniforms and ice forming on nearby power lines.
Indianapolis Fire Department crews are on the scene of a massive fire at a vacant building at 30th and Clifton St. This is on the Indianapolis west side.
Crews established a safe perimeter after they determined a structure collapse was imminent. They're still attacking the fire from the exterior and dealing with bitterly cold conditions.
The power was shut off to a four-block area around 30th and Clifton after utilities secured the scene for firefighters' safety. IPL crews are working to restore power. Residents are asked to shelter in place and not use appliances for heat.
IFD says the Red Cross is on the way to assist, and the Pilgrim Baptist Church is providing a warm place for firefighters to rest.
According to IFD, this is the former United Northwest Association building, and before that it was the AFNB Bank.
