Bosma: Lawmakers will step in on education war

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma says the General Assembly will likely have to step in to the ongoing "civil war" between Democratic Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz and the Republican administration.

The fighting between Ritz and Gov. Mike Pence hit a peak last Wednesday during a State Board of Education meeting. Ritz abruptly ended the meeting over concerns that more of her powers would be shifted to a newly-created Pence education agency.

Pence on Friday asked a national school boards group to step into the ongoing power struggle.

Bosma did not say exactly what lawmakers would do Monday but dismissed suggestions that Ritz be removed as board chairwoman or that the superintendent be appointed by the governor.

His comments came at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative preview.
