Effort leads to headstone for Civil War veteran

Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

A previously unmarked grave site of a Civil War veteran has a new granite headstone because of the efforts of a pair of northern Indiana men.

The Herald Republican reports Greg Cranston of Middlebury, and his father, Tom Cranston Sr. of Jimmerson Lake discovered the grave site in Fort Wayne of an ancestor named John Cranston. They learned he didn't die in the war, but died in 1871 after being kicked in the chest by a horse.

Once they acquired Cranston's military records, they wrote the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs asking for a headstone. Three weeks later, the headstone was placed. It has the Civil War union shield stamped on it.

A ceremony is planned for next Memorial Day.
