Marion County Clerk Beth White announced Monday that she is seeking the Democratic nomination for Indiana Secretary of State in 2014.

White announced Monday she'll seek the office next year. If picked by Democrats at their convention next year, she would likely face incumbent Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson.

The Secretary of State's office typically receives little attention beyond election matters and business registrations. But the continuing legal drama of former Republican Secretary Charlie White has kept the office in the news. White was sentenced with a year of home detention after being convicted of six felonies.

The charges stem from questions of whether he committed voter fraud while seeking office in 2010.

Beth White (no relation to Charlie White) is in her second term as clerk. She has advocated early voting and also testified before the legislature to remove barriers to voting.

In addition to overseeing elections, the clerk is also the chief fiscal agent and record keeper for the county's Superior and Circuit Courts.

White pointed out a study that found only 38% of US adults could name the three branches of government; an alarming 33% could not name one. White believes the "movement away from civics in the classroom has lead to apathy on Election Day."

She also cited the Indiana State Bar Association's 2011 Civic Health Index which puts Indiana at 48th in voter turnout.
