Few people turned out for the first of four Indiana public meetings on the proposed Illiana Expressway between northwestern Indiana and Chicago's south suburbs.
The meeting Saturday on the campus of Indiana University Northwest in Gary and the three to follow are gathering public comment on the proposed $1.3 billion toll road between Interstate 65 about 20 miles south of Gary and I-55 in Will County, Ill.
The (Munster) Times reports former truck driver Mike Echterling of Highland went to the meeting and said truckers will be unwilling to pay tolls on a road that comprises only a small part of their routes.
Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Pinkerton said the road will improve mobility and local accessibility.
Another meeting is scheduled Tuesday evening at Lowell Middle School.
