A soon-to-be occupied duplex was heavily damaged by fire early Friday morning.  The renter was due to move in over the weekend.

Crews were called to the 3100 block of East Midland Road just after 2:00 a.m.

A neighbor's dogs were agitated and awakened her just before 2:00 a.m. on Epler Avenue, just behind the duplex. When she let them out and spotted flames coming through the roof.

Heavy fire was coming out of one side of the single-story duplex when IFD arrived, and crews needed 25 minutes to control the blaze.

Damage is estimated at $100,000, according to IFD.  The cause is under investigation.

Linda Monroe, who had lived in the other side of the duplex for the past two weeks, said she smelled smoke earlier in the evening, but could not locate a source. She will stay with friends her side of the duplex undergoes repair.

Both the owner and renter have insurance.
