Indiana extends high-risk insurance through Jan. 31

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana residents who are facing serious health issues and are in the state's high-risk insurance pool will have coverage until at least Jan. 31.

Department of Insurance Commissioner Steve Robertson on Thursday extended the high-risk pool that covers about 6,800 people because of difficulties with federal health insurance exchanges.

Indiana lawmakers voted in April to dissolve the high-risk pool with the understanding that those in it would get coverage through the new federal exchange

But many people have had trouble signing up for health insurance through the exchanges that opened Oct. 1 as part of the federal health care overhaul.

Robertson says those in the pool aren't able to schedule treatments without proof of health coverage for the coming year.

The state will spend $6.3 million to extend the coverage.
