Shave the Date: Mayor Ballard to kick off Movember Indy

Updated:

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard announces today he will "shave the date" on Friday, Nov. 1 at Red's Classic Barber Shop for the Kick-Off Shave-Off event organized by Movember Indy, the thriving local organization of the global men's health charity Movember. To support raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, Movember Indy rallies local moustache enthusiasts to sharpen their razors and partake in this worldwide movement.

Movember began in Melbourne, Australia, and has since grown into a worldwide campaign that calls attention to men's health issues. Since 2003, more than 1.1 million men have participated, raising $174 million. In the U.S., the beneficiaries are the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG Foundation.

From 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Hoosiers across the Indianapolis area will join together to mark the beginning of Movember. All participants will receive a Movember Shave Special, which is hot lather/straight razor shave for $17 (normally $27). Mayor Ballard will be one of the hundreds of men to receive a shave in honor of the hairy journey that millions of men worldwide are preparing to embark on.

A portion of the proceeds from all shaves at Red's Classic Barber Shop during the month of "Movember" will benefit the program's support by the funds raised by the thousands of men who participate in the month-long hirsute initiative.

In 2012, over 2,800 gallant Hoosiers sported hirsute facial masterpieces raising nearly $93,000 in Indianapolis and $145,000 across the state. After nearly doubling participation in 2011, Indianapolis was named the second largest participation increase in major cities nationwide by the national Movember Foundation.

"The moustache is our hairy ribbon of support for prostate and testicular cancer awareness," said Bryan Kendall, the local chairman of Movember Indy. "Growing a Mo is more than just a way to raise money – it's a conversation starter. At the end of the day, educating and building awareness is what matters most."

Indianapolis men and women can register to grow or support a Mo on the national website.

Registered Mo Bro's are invited to showcase their facial craftsmanship at various local events. For more information on how to get involved with Movember Indy or for a list of events, please visit http://movemberindy.com. Connect with Movember Indy on Facebook or Twitter.
