WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -

The first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church will be at Purdue University to speak and attend a diversity celebration.

Retired New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson will speak at the university Sunday and Monday. Robinson told the Journal & Courier reports that at first he resented the moniker "gay bishop." But then he came to embrace it.

He says he realized God had given me an opportunity to advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Robinson is now asenior fellow for the Center for American Progress, a nonpartisan think tank based in Washington, D.C.
