FDA recommends new restrictions for hydrocodone

Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

In an attempt to cut down on prescription drug abuse, the Food and Drug Administration is recommending new restrictions be placed on prescription painkillers containing hydrocodone.

The FDA wants to reduce the number of refills patients could get before going back to see their doctor. The new restrictions would also require having a written prescription rather than having the doctor call the pharmacy.

The FDA says the highly addictive painkiller should be subject to the same restrictions as other narcotic drugs like oxycodone and morphine. Hydrocodone is the most widely prescribed drug in the country.
