SOUTH BEND -

A developer has been picked to transform a vacant nine-story hotel in downtown South Bend into nearly 60 apartments.

Officials say plans are for the city to sell the former LaSalle Hotel to Great Lakes Capital of South Bend in a $1 deal. The city will spend almost $2 million on cleanup, with the company spending $9 million on remodeling.

Company partner Brad Toothaker tells The South Bend Tribune it is considering ideas for the ground floor, including restaurants and retail stores to create a draw for the building.

Toothaker says the building has many beautiful features and great views of the University of Notre Dame's Golden Dome and the St. Joseph River.

The hotel was built in 1921 and has been vacant for about 11 years.
