SPARKS, NV -

Police are investigating a shooting at Sparks Middle School in northern Nevada that has left two dead and two others injured.

It happened in Sparks, Nevada, east of Reno. Police say an incident before school led to the shooting. It ended with two students critically wounded, and a teacher who intervened shot and killed.

Math teacher Michael Landsberry was killed in the shooting, his family confirmed.

"Two of the injured students, one has gone through surgery and is out at this time. The other individual is doing well. The one deceased is a staff member of the school, Sparks Middle School. The other deceased individual at this point in time appears to be a student-suspect in this case," said Police Chief Mike Mieras, Washoe County School District.

Police have not identified the person responsible for the shooting yet. They say they are still working on a motive in the case. The school evacuated the students and cancelled classes for the day.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning. My administration is receiving regular updates and the Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene. Kathleen and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims and those affected by these tragic events," said Governor Brian Sandoval.

A Sparks police dispatcher says the call came in at 7:16 a.m. Monday.
