Led by senior Terone Johnson, red shirt-freshman Jay Simpson and freshman Bryson Scott, the Black team topped the Gold team in the first preseason intrasquad scrimmages, held Saturday evening at Mackey Arena. The Black team outscored the Gold by a combined 79-62 margin.
The two teams combined to shoot 49-of-105 (.467) from the field, 11-of-28 (.393) from three-point range and 32-of-43 (.744) from the free throw line in 30 minutes of game action.
Leading the Black squad was Terone Johnson, who connected on 6-of-13 field goal attempts, including 3-of-7 from long distance to match his brother, Ronnie Johnson, with a game-high 22 points. Terone Johnson added four rebounds and three assists, helping the Black squad win all three games.
Simpson also went 3-0 for the Black squad, scoring 17 points on 8-of-11 field goal attempts with five rebounds.
Scott had a strong outing in his first game experience, scoring 18 points with eight assists and three rebounds. Scott was able to get into the lane and draw contact as he went to the free throw line 15 times, making 12 of them.
Ronnie Johnson paced the Gold squad with 22 points and four assists, connecting on 8-of-18 shots from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point distance.
Freshman Kendall Stephens showed off his sharp-shooting skills, scoring 14 points while making 4-of-8 three-point tries, many from well beyond the three-point arc. He also added five rebounds.
Senior Erick Peck led both teams with 12 rebounds, while Rapheal Davis added nine points and nine rebounds for the Gold squad.
A.J. Hammons was 5-of-6 from the field for 10 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots for the Black squad.
Senior Sterling Carter was the other player in double-figures today, scoring 12 points, including two three-pointers, for the Gold team.
The Boilermakers will hold a second intrasquad scrimmage next Saturday morning (Oct. 26), beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m.
The scrimmage is open to the public and admission is free.
