Small Seelyville church appeals closure to Vatican

Updated:

A western Indiana church is appealing the Archdiocese of Indianapolis' decision to close it in hopes that residents can continue to celebrate Mass and worship together.

Holy Rosary in Seelyville lost its status as a church a year ago as part of the Archdiocese's plan to "to best use the Church's resources to achieve even more vibrant ministries." Three other churches closed.

The move means Holy Rosary can have baptisms, weddings and funerals. But member Jean Anne Jenkins tells the Tribune-Star it is only allowed to have Mass once a year on its anniversary date, the Feast of the Holy Rosary.

Parishioners want to be able to celebrate Mass together regularly and have hired a Vatican lawyer to help with an appeal to the Signatura.
