Updated:

Metro police are investigating a crash that critically injured a bicyclist on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were dispatched to E. 38th St. just east of Hawthorne Lane at about 8:30 pm. When officers arrived, they found Luke Alberts, 25, of Indianapolis, injured and on the ground. An ambulance transported Alberts to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle that struck Alberts fled the scene after the crash.

Based on witness accounts, police were looking for a white Ford vehicle. A short time later, police located a suspect vehicle and took a 24-year-old male into custody.

Police believe the same suspect caused another crash on E. 36th at Alsace Dr., where an unoccupied parked vehicle was struck.

Officers suspect the driver may have consumed alcohol or another illegal intoxicant. Police say he has not been arrested, but that preliminary charges are possible after investigators finish their on-scene investigation.
