Man convicted in slaying at Fort Wayne Legion post

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Jurors have convicted a man in a fatal shooting that happened outside an American Legion post in Fort Wayne.

The Allen County jury convicted Eric Smith of Fort Wayne on Wednesday of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon charges. Authorities say Smith shot 37-year-old Jabron Totton during a confrontation in the parking lot of the legion post soon after it closed about 3 a.m. on June 9.

The Journal Gazette reports one witness testified about talking with Smith as the post closed, then soon hearing gunshots and seeing Totton fall as Smith walked casually away in the neighborhood just east of the city's downtown.

Smith faces a prison sentence of 45 year to 65 years on the murder conviction.
