Northern Indiana teen dies after football practice collapse

LAPORTE, Ind -

A northern Indiana high school player who collapsing during practice died of natural causes.
 
WNDU-TV reports an autopsy Thursday showed 17-year-old Jake West of LaPorte High School died from a condition in which damaged heart muscle is replaced by scar tissue and fat, weakening the pumping of the heart.
 
LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan says that after West collapsed, bystanders and coaches performed CPR and emergency workers shocked him with a defibrillator before taking him to a hospital.
 
His teammates will wear stickers on their helmets honoring West during Friday's game at Merrillville.
 
West was a junior linebacker for the 1,900-student school about 25 miles west of South Bend.
