A veteran Indianapolis police officer died Wednesday evening of a heart attack.

Officer Timothy Day collapsed while attending services at an east Indianapolis church around 8 p.m. Wednesday. He passed away a short time later at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

IMPD Ofc. Kendale Adams says Day, a 26-year IMPD veteran, "was a valued and loyal member" of the department's Violent Crimes Unit.

"IMPD has lost another fine Officer that served our community and department admirably, in one of the most dangerous and decorated units within IMPD.@ He will be missed by our department and this city," said IMPD Chief Rick Hite. "Please continue to pray for our department's strength as we deal with these challenging times."

Officer Day's passing comes as the department and the city are mourning the death of Officer Rod Bradway, who was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance on the northwest side of Indianapolis last week. Funeral services for Bradway are being held Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Another IMPD officer, Greg Stevens, is recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered during a shootout with a suspect early Tuesday morning.
