Thousands of officers from around the country, along with the community, honored Officer Rod Bradway at his visitation Wednesday at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Officer Bradway was shot to death trying to save a woman being held hostage in her apartment last Friday morning.
At least 1,500 police officers were expected from all over the country. Hundreds more are expected to attend the viewing and funeral itself.
"It all goes to show the family, the department and the city that Rod's life meant a lot to a lot of people and that hopefully this is just a small way to show our appreciation for his sacrifice and that he will not be forgotten," said Officer Scott McDaniel, FOP Memorial Team.
"As a police department, we're all family," said IMPD Ofc. Billy Erickson. "We feel like we've lost a part of our family."
The community is wrapping its arms around the fallen hero.
"We will honor him. For everything he's done, for everything he's given, paying the ultimate price," said Erickson.
The city gave its highest honor to Bradway at Wednesday's visitation - an American flag, the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor.
"Rod made this city and this country a better place," said IMPD Chief Rick Hite.
But it was an emotional embrace for Bradway's wife that said it all, a police force grateful for his courage and heroism. Among those who came to honor Bradway were children who know his children, struggling with grief.
"You just really want to help him and you can't help him and it hurts, a lot," said Brandon Hart, a classmate of Jonathan Bradway. "I'm sorry, Jonathan. If there's anything you ever need, I'll always be there for you."
Fellow officers from across the state are showing their support, including several from his hometown of Nappanee.
"It's just showing they're loved. They're going to be taken care of, they're not going to be alone in this hard time," said Nappanee Police Sgt. Brad Balasa.
There were also those who did not know Bradway, but appreciate his sacrifice.
"He died being a hero, for someone like me - a mother," said Zenobia Haynes of Indianapolis.
Haynes brought her seven foster children to share a lesson.
"As they watch other heroes on television, I felt like they need to see a real hero in person today," she said.
And they did, along with hundreds of others, who are now preparing to say goodbye.
Officer Bradway's funeral is Thursday morning at 11:00 am at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. After the funeral, the procession will go past the Wayne Township Fire Station where Bradway once worked. It will also pause at IMPD's Northwest District Command before ending at Crown Hill Cemetery.
