WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Twelve Indiana schools have been honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Four of the schools honored are in central Indiana, including Creekside Middle School in Carmel, Laura G. Childs Elementary School in Bloomington, Saint Maria Goretti School in Westfield and Saint Louis de Montfort Catholic School in Fishers.

The Department of Education will honor the schools, which are part of 286 nationwide, for their overall academic excellence and progress in improving student academic achievement at a ceremony November 18-19 in Washington, D.C.

"Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education."

The schools are recognized in two categories, "Exemplary High Performing" and "Exemplary Improving." The first category honors schools that rate highly among state assessments or nationally-normed tests. The second category recognizes schools where at least 40 percent of students are from disadvantaged backgrounds and demonstrate the most progress improving student achievement levels on the same tests.
