Death toll could rise from Ottawa train-bus crash

Updated:

Authorities say the death toll could rise from a bus and train collision in Canada's capital.

A passenger train slammed into a double-decker bus in Ottawa at the height of rush hour Wednesday morning. The front of the bus was ripped off in the crash. Officials say at least a half a dozen people were killed and many more injured.

"Tragically I have to report that at the scene paramedics had to declare five persons deceased on scene. Nothing could be done and of the 31 that were transported, we've just been advised that one is now deceased in the hospital for a total of six deaths at this point," said Anthony Di Monte, Chief Ottawa Paramedic Service.

The bus driver was among those killed. A third of those injured are in critical condition. Witnesses told CTV news the bus went through a lowered crossing.
